Advice on What to Do in Ohau from a Local

There is no shortage of what to see and do in Hawaii. Everyone has their two cents worth on what you should do with your vacation time there. While most of this information can help you make an educated guess on what to do, wouldn’t it be better if you could get advice from a local? Well, you are in luck, at least if you are visiting Ohau. We had a chance to interview a friend who lived in Ohau for several years and this is what he had to say.

What is the best thing about Oahu?
Centrally located to other islands-Big airport, LOTS of night life and EASY sightseeing, Has both rural and urban settings. More adapted for an easy (and cheaper) vacation.

What do tourists get too hyped up about? In other words, what is overrated?
The luaus, and tour bus excursions (which you can do by yourself for much cheaper). Also people expect the weather to be perfect year round and it’s not.

What activities are worth investing in, on Oahu?
Surf lessons (not just renting a board), Diving, Seeing the USS Missouri, shark cage dives, Skydiving, Sunset cruise off Waikiki.

What are the best restaurants on Oahu?
Dukes on Waikiki Beach, Tanaka of Tokyo which I believe is on the Ilikai hotel, Lulu’s and Kobe

What free activities are the best?
Snorkeling Hanauma bay ($9), Hiking Manoa falls, Driving around the island, Screen on the beach, and the Hula dancers on Waikiki Beach at sunset

Where can you get the best views?
Tantalus, Pali, Haleiwa, Makapuu

What time of year is the best to visit?
Personally, I think late fall around August or September. It is usually kind of rainy in spring and winter, summer’s can be pretty busy.

Tell us the best kept secrets of Oahu?
The cultural diversity, music scene, good diving, great hiking as well. The big secret for tourists is that activities are more accessible and less expensive here than anywhere else in Hawaii.

Tell us a legend, history lesson, if you will.
How Kamehameha united the islands by using cannons and guns he saw from capt. cook. They drove the Maui chief up the valley to the Pali lookout and literally pushed his army off the cliffs. It is a very sacred spot.

What advice should all visitors/tourists have before going to Oahu?
Be financially prepared, you wont want to skimp once you’re out there. Learn about the weather and ocean conditions as they change from location to location. Don’t expect to blend in (unless your blending in with tourists!) and be prepared for local interaction if you decide to rent a car. Although the bust system is great, renting a car is great idea because it will allow you to explore more of the island.
