Kaunaoa Beach

Kaunaoa beach (aka Mauna Kea Beach) is a large, perfect, crescent-shaped, powdery-white-sand beach fringed with palm trees. If you ever were to sit and imagine the quintessential Hawaiian beach, this is what you would come up with. The beach itself is sheltered and the waves are calm (not as sheltered or calm as Spencers for small kids, but still great for big kids).

September 11th Remembered in Hawaii - 5 year anniversary

Hawaii, although physically as far removed as any state in the nation from the September 11th tragedy, felt the pain, anguish, and loss just as clearly and achingly as anyone else in the nation. In fact, in the initial days that followed many of us felt particularly impotent because we couldn’t even participate in the call for blood donations as the planes weren’t flying and any blood given would just stay here in Hawaii.

National parks in Hawaii

Haleakala National Park on Maui – A sprawling park stretching from the ocean to the mountain (however you can not get to the ocean from the mountain access road or vice versa but the entrance fees for one will get you into the other). The mountain area has the famous downhill bike ride, plants unique to the area, hiking, and fantastic sunrises. The ocean area is past Hana and has hiking, waterfalls with swimmable pools, and beaches.

There are 4 National Parks on the Big Island

The Best Beaches on Oahu - Best Popular and Easy-to-find Beaches

When talking about an island made up of nothing but great beaches we could be here forever, so I’m going to break this post up a bit. These beaches are my favorite of the most popular beaches - the ones that are easy to find and filled with people. Going during the week will ease the crowding quite a bit at all but Waikiki Beach.

Spencer Beach Park

My son and I spent a long, enjoyable afternoon at Spencer Beach Park on the Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Let me share it with you.

beach view from the left side

Spencer beach is a medium-to-small sized, crescent-shaped, white-sand beach. Large trees mostly on the beach provide plenty of shade on both ends of the beach and along the back. There are picnic tables, showers, bathrooms, some barbecue grills, a basketball court, and a pavilion.
