The Waimea Country Lodge is Clean and Convenient

My son and I stayed at the Waimea Country Lodge for a night last month. It is a small, laid-back, budget type of place. I liked it, but then, I’m easy. Be sure to feed me and give me a quiet place to sleep and I’m ecstatic. Anyone who wants elegance and views should just skip staying in Waimea altogether - go for the Kohala Coast or Kona instead.

Daily Dose 9.18

Hi everyone! Well, the EK Fernandez curse is lifted! The Hawaii County fair weather was fabulous. There was a little bit of rain the first night, and I thought for sure it would be as rainy as it always is, but NO. It was nice all weekend. .. and here’s your news.

Discount Cards in Hawaii

Go Oahu Card - This is a new program, less than a year old, but it follows the popular model of other Go cards around the country. This card is only good for Oahu. You purchase a one, two, three, five, or seven day card for a set amount. During those days you can do as many activities that time will allow - just show your card for admission. Sample activities available are entrance into Sea Life Park, and a circle island tour. I tried out a one day subscription once, to see how it worked. It worked great - I just showed my card and was admitted. You’d have to really hustle to get in more than two activities on most days, thus minimizing the savings - but you can save with it. It’s also great as a gift or for kids or to manage your spending on your vacation.

Awesome Tidepools in Kapoho Vacationland

In 2003, the shoreline off of Kapoho Vacation Land was made into a marine santuary. Now called the Waiopae Tidepools Marine Life Conservation District, no fishing or spearing of any kind is allowed. I visited the tidepools in 1997 or so, and was not impressed. I went again last month, and was blown away.

Where have all the dolphins gone?

dolphins underwater at Kealakekua Bay I live near the ocean and exercise on an ocean path or go to the beach at least once each day. 10 years ago I would have seen dolphins swimming and jumping near shore about once a month. It’s hard to judge pod size from shore, but I have seen pods that I would judge to be as small as 10 dolphins up to as big as 75 dolphins. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ve seen a pod of dolphins from shore in 3 or 4 years. I haven’t heard of any major decline of dolphins in Hawaiian waters, so I think they must be avoiding areas heavily-trafficked by humans.

Parking in Hawaii

Parking in Hawaii you will be different on each island and sometimes very different from area to area around the island. Parking is normally not even an issue in places considered more ‘country’ like all of Lanai and Molokai and a lot of Kauai and the Big Island. Oahu and Maui, however, can be veritable traffic and parking nightmares.

Big Island Volcanoes Active and Dangerous

Because Kilauea has been erupting for over 20 years now and some people have gotten close enough to feel the heat from the lava, people sometimes think it’s a ‘tame’ volcano. Well, there’s no such thing. We on the Big Island are lucky that Kilauea is a relatively gentle volcano, normally lacking in the explosive qualities that create a need for evacuation of entire areas.

Daily Dose 9.14

The Hawaii County Fair starts tonight for 4 days. I’ll be watching to see if the ‘EK Fernandez curse’ holds up. Every time the fair comes to Hilo, we have torrential rains that make the fairgrounds and the parking area a muddy mess. I remember last spring we were literally walking in ankle-deep water in the rain to each ride. Of course we still go. We do a lot of activities in the sweet, warm Hilo rain. Don’t worry, I’ll be sending my husband and son to report back to me while I slave …

Take Precautions Against Sunburn in Hawaii - Please!

Look, I know you are coming to Hawaii for the sun and the weather and the beautiful
beaches. I know because that is what I love about Hawaii too - but do you know what I hate about Hawaii? I hate it when I go to a touristy beach and I see tourists walking around or sunbathing that are *already beet red and burnt by the sun!* I just don’t get it! Just looking at these people is painful to me.

So here’s what you do to avoid getting burnt on your vacation.
